Assignment 1 (Think, Pair, Share)

Assalamualaikum Wbt.

It has been such a hectic week for me. A lot of works that need to be done and I have to combat with the wireless connection for it is working very poorly as well as the time which seems very envy of me. Not forgetting, the shallow knowledge of mine in ICT also forces me to really give the best of me in discovering the world of so-called mighty Technology!

So, let’s go to our business. What should we do this week?

Assignment 1! Yes, this week we are assigned to do an assignment which is called Think, Pair and Share. We are given ten topics and each topic will be chosen by 2 students. Which means, a pair of students will have to do one same topic since there are 20 of us. So, my partner, Barbara Kath and I chose topic 4; Internet and Computer Security (Virus, Spam, and Phishing). Personally, I am really grateful to have such a very dedicated partner. She (Barbara Kath) was really helpful and did help me a lot in explaining to me what the topic is about since I am not really good in it. Even I myself realize that based on the topic that we chose, I somehow get the gist a little bit about what phishing is, how does virus get spread, and so on. Again, I am very thankful for having the opportunity to work with such a wonderful partner and who has helped me a lot in coping with the topic chosen.

So, what is Internet and Computer Security? We realize how the technology has brought in changes to us, the mankind. It changes almost in every aspect of our lives be it in trading, financing, communicating, discovering, learning and lots more. In fact, nowadays, internet which is known for its mighty use has also become more and more popular among the people all around the world. It is no longer possible for one to communicate with their friends who are at the other side of the world via Skype. It is no longer needed for us to go to the Mall to buy a pair of shoes when we can order them online. Since internet is being used worldwide, a major concern that rises is the security. Is it safe? Can our social networking account be hacked by some intruders? How to keep our account safe? How to prevent ourselves from get cheated? Thus, these are some of the few questions that have been lingering around the users’ minds.
Well, basically, there are three fundamental terms that every user should know. They are virus, spam and phishing.

First thing first, what is virus? I am pretty sure that everybody acknowledged what virus is about. Based on the article that Barbara and I wrote, a virus is defined as a small piece of software that replicate on real programs. You might want to know how it works right. A virus might attach to a program let sat a spread sheet program. So, whenever the program runs, the virus will reproduce by attaching to other programs. Subsequently, it will cause damages to computer if it is left unattended. One of the common viruses would be Trojan horse. It does harm our computer program if we choose to run it.

Next is spam. It is any kind of unwanted online communication. One of the most common forms of spam would be junk e-mail or unwanted email. Beware with spam, even though it is harmless and annoying, it can also be some kind of identity theft scam or other kind of fraud. However, junk e-mail can be prevented provided that we use email software with built-in spam filtering.

Last but not least is phishing. What is phishing all about? It is a fraudulent attempt which usually made through email messages, websites and phone calls to steal either our personal information or our money. Normally, hackers will install malicious software on our computer so that they can easily steal our personal information off of our computer. Besides that, they also use the trick of threatening the users. For example, users are asked to download some kind of unidentified software and if they fail to do so, their account will be permanently deactivated and so on. Besides that, one question that we should ask ourselves is, why do some people get cheated easily by all those phishing emails? Well, easy. Normally, phishing emails come from popular or well-known websites for instance Facebook. Therefore, this is one of the major reasons why do they get cheated easily, they trust that particular websites so much.

In a nutshell, I strongly urge every one of us to not to take internet security for granted as we are dealing with the matter of our privacy and identity. Most importantly, do not trust any website or company that you are doubtful about. Moreover, protect your computer with anti-virus so that you could save the life span of your computer besides prevent it from being attacked by some harmful viruses. In fact, I personally believe that I have obtained quite a lot of information based on the topic that Barbara and I had chosen. It is really useful and crucial for every one of us to at least know a little bit about it. In addition, I could also share this useful information with others as well so that they realize how important it is for us to keep our personal information and computer in a safety condition.

That is all from me for the second week of learning.

Thank you!
Happy reading and learning!
Good day!
